Year A — 3 Epiphany (2008) Preached by Fr. Keucher

First, I want to apologize for the confusion of scheduling a bilingual service at the last minute for today.

Primero, quisiera disculparme por la confusión de haber fijado a última hora una misa bilingüe para hoy. 

It was necessary to do this so that the entire membership of the Episcopal Church Women could be together for their corporate communion.

Era necesario hacerlo para que todas las miembras de Las Damas Episcopales pudieran venir juntas para su comunión colectiva.

This morning I want to lay out again my dream for the future of this parish.

Esta mañana, quisiera desplegar mi sueño para el futuro de esta parroquia.

In the nearly two years I have been with you, we have made progress in several areas.

En los casi dos años que estoy con Uds., hemos progresado en varias categorías.

We raised $210,000 to make some repairs on the heating system. We have redone five bathrooms; there are only eleven still to do.

Reunimos Dos Cientos Mil Dólares para hacer algunas reparaciones en el sistema de calefacción.  Hemos hecho renovaciones en cinco baños (¡todavía quedan solamente once que hacer!).

We have stopped the water from flooding the crypt chapel every time it rains.

Impedimos el agua inundar la capilla en la cripta cada vez que llueva.

The number of people who signed pledge cards for 2008 is higher than in previous years, and the total amount pledged has increased substantially.

El número de personas que firmaron promesas para el año Dos Mil Ocho es más grande que en los años previos.

The attendance at our Sunday services is also increasing.

La concurrencia en nuestras misas de los domingos también es más grande.

Buildings, budgets, bodies — these are all part of what I came here to do.

Edificios, presupuestos, concurrencia—estos hacen una parte de lo que vine a hacer.

But all these things are not the most important aspect of what I dream of accomplishing.

Pero todo esto no es el aspecto más importante de lo que quisiera realizar.

I want for Intercession what St. Paul wanted for the church in Corinth: “ Now I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you should be in agreement and that there should be no divisions among you, but that you should be united in the same mind and the same purpose. For it has been reported to me by Chloe’s people that there are quarrels among you, my brothers and sisters.”

Quisiera para la Intercesión lo que San Pablo quería para la iglesia de Corinto:  “Les ruego, hermanos, en el nombre de Cristo Jesús, nuestro Señor, que se pongan de acuerdo y que no haya divisiones entre ustedes.  Vivan unidos en el mismo pensar y sentir.  La familia de Cloe me ha informado que hay rivalidades entre ustedes.”

Here is my dream for this wonderful parish.

Aquí está mi visión para esta parroquia maravillosa.

I want this parish to be composed of all kinds of people who think of themselves and one another as members of the same body.

Quisiera que esta parroquia sea compuesta de todos tipos de personas que se consideran todas como miembros del mismo cuerpo.

I want us to worship in different languages at different times, but always remembering that we are one body.

Quisiera que adoremos a Dios en varias lenguas a varias horas, pero que recordemos siempre que somos un solo cuerpo.

I want there to be people of different races, different cultures, different languages, married, single, gay and straight, children and seniors, wealthy and poor, all working and praying and living together.

Quisiera que haya personas de varias razas, varias culturas, varias lenguas, casados, solteros, heterosexuals y gay, jóvenes y mayores, ricos y pobres, todos trabajando, orando y viviendo juntos.

This is not an easy thing to do.

No es fácil de hacer.

It’s much easier when we’re with people who are like us.

Es mucho más fácil cuando estemos con gente como nosotros.

If we’re all from the same town, or the same culture, or the same race, or the same economic circumstances, it is easier to get along.

Si somos todos del mismo pueblo, o de la misma cultura, o de la misma raza, o de las mismas circonstancias económicas, es más fácil llevarnos bien.

Then we can say, “If other people want to be part of us, they’ll have to accommodate themselves to us.”

Entonces, podemos decir, “Si los otros quieren hacer parte de nosotros, hay que se adapten a nosotros.”

Jesus wants more from us.

Jesús quiere más de nosotros.

Jesus wants us to accommodate ourselves to others, rather than requiring others to accommodate themselves to us.

Jesús quiere que nosotros nos adaptemos a los demás, y que no requeramos que los demás se adapten a nosotros.

This is difficult.

Esto es difícil.

We have our customs; we have our own language; we have our ways of doing things.

Tenemos nuestras costumbres; tenemos nuestra lengua; tenemos nuestras maneras de hacer lo que hacemos.

We’ve been here longer. Why shouldn’t they change if they want to be part of us?

Estamos aquí desde más tiempo que los otros.  ¿Por qué no deberían cambiarse si quieren ser parte de nosotros?

Why? Because Jesus and St. Paul and I and Fr. Fred and Mo. Nora want something better for you.

¿Por qué?  Porque Jesús, y San Pablo y yo y Padre Fred y Madre Nora queremos algo mejor para ustedes.

We want you to put others’ preferences and needs ahead of your own.

Queremos que Uds. pongan las preferencias y las necesidades de los otros delante de las suyas.

We want you to treat others the way you would like them to treat you.

Quisiéramos que traten a los otros en la misma manera en que ustedes quisieran que ellos los traten a ustedes.

We want you to be spiritually strong enough so that you can be unfailingly kind and thoughtful.

Queremos que sean bastante fuertes espiritualmente para que puedan ser amables y atentos sin falta.

We have one parish here.

Tenemos aquí una sola parroquia.

We have three services in two different languages, but we have one parish.

Tenemos tres misas en dos lenguas distintas, pero tenemos una sola parroquia.

We have one youth group. We have one chapter of the Episcopal Church Women.

Tenemos un solo grupo de jóvenes.  Tenemos una sola asociación de las Damas Episcopales.

I am going to make sure to the best of my ability that we always remember that we are one.

Voy a esforzarme lo más posible que recordemos siempre que somos un solo cuerpo.

My plan was to have one bilingual service each month, so that we would be reminded regularly that we are one parish that worships in two languages.

Era mi propósito que tengamos una misa bilingüe cada mes, para que recordemos de manera regular que somos una sola parroquia que adora a Dios en dos lenguas.

We are having a bilingual service today so the ECW can be all together, so we will not have another bilingual service after this until Palm Sunday, on March 16.

Hoy tenemos una misa bilingüe para que las Damas Episcopales puedan reunirse todas juntos [sic], y no tendremos otra misa bilingüe hasta el Domingo de los Ramos, el dieciséis de marzo.

We have one parish here, made up of different kinds of people.

Tenemos una sola parroquia, compuesta de diferentes tipos de personas.

I want us all to be kind to one another in our differences.

Quisiera que seamos amables los unos a los otros con nuestras diferencias.

This may be different from the way Canon Williams encouraged you to deal with the differences among you; I’m not sure.

Quizás sea diferente de la manera en que el Canónigo Williams los animaba tratar de las diferencias entre ustedes; no estoy seguro.

But this one thing I am very sure of. I want everyone to be kind.

Pero de esto estoy seguro: quiero que seamos todos amables.

I do not want any individual or any group to make decisions that will exclude others or make them feel less a part of our parish.

Quiero que ningún individuo y ningún grupo hagan decisiones que excluyan a los otros o los hagan sentir menos una parte de la parroquia.

We are all full members of this parish, no matter what service we attend, and I appeal to you all to act accordingly.

Somos todos miembros plenos de esta parroquia, cual que sea el servicio a que asistimos, y les ruego que actúen por consiguiente.

So be kind. Be considerate. Be thoughtful. If you act that way because you want to act that way, thank God.

Entonces, sean amables.  Sean considerados.  Sean atentos.  Si actúan así porque quieren actuar así, gracias a Dios.

If there are times when you are tempted to be unkind, please stop, if only because you know that as long as I am here with you, that’s not how it’s going to be.

Si hay ocasiones cuando ustedes sean tentados a no ser amables, por favor, ¡párense!, aún si es unicamente porque saben que, mientras que yo esté aquí con ustedes, no va a ser así.

With God’s help, and with yours, we are going to become the kind of place about which others can truthfully exclaim, “See how these Christians love one another.”

Con la ayuda de Dios y con la ayuda de ustedes, vamos a llegar a ser el tipo de personas de quienes los otros pueden decir con razón, “¡Miren cómo estos cristianos se aman los unos a los otros!

May God bless us in this effort.

Que Dios nos bendiga en esta tentativa.

I think He will, because I think that this will make God’s kind heart rejoice.

Creo que Él lo hará, porque creo que esto va a hacer regocijarse el corazón amable de Dios.
