The Reverend Jerry Keucher

Reverend Jerry Keucher was born in New Haven CT, the third of four children of Martha Lewis Keucher and the Rev. Werner Gerald Keucher, then the pastor of the American Baptist Church in Shelton CT. The next year Jerry's father became the President of a Baptist lay training school in Chicago, where the family lived until Mr. Keucher's death in 1957. Jerry's mother moved the family to Franklin IN, where she had gone to college, and Jerry lived there until entering Indiana University, Bloomington, in 1970. After becoming a member of Phi Beta Kappa in 1972, he graduated magna cum laude in 1973 with a double major in French and Italian and stayed at I.U. to complete in 1975 an M.A. in Italian language and literature. He lived on Nantucket Island off Cape Cod until moving to New York in 1977. Within a few months he had met the Rev. John H. Walsted and moved to Staten Island.

From 1977 until entering seminary in 1990 Jerry held several positions in not-for-profit finance and administration for such institutions as the Italian Cultural Institute in Manhattan, the Staten Island Botanical Garden, the Staten Island Institute of Arts and Sciences, and the Staten Island Borough President's staff.

From 1982, when Fr. Walsted became priest-in-charge, then Rector, of Christ Church, New Brighton, Jerry spent the largest part of his efforts assisting him with his parish work. The two purchased One Pendleton Place in the fall of 1983 after Fr. Walsted's election as Rector. The restoration of the house, designated a New York City landmark in 2006, and the opportunities for hospitality the house offered became major themes in both their lives.

At this time Jerry also became active in the affairs of the Diocese of New York, attending Diocesan Conventions and serving on the Diocesan Council and several other diocesan bodies.

Also during the 1980s Marsha and Marcel Thompson, then in high school, joined the household at One Pendleton Place. In 1989 Jerry's mother moved from Indiana to live with Jerry and John.

Jerry received his M.Div. from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1993, and an S.T.M. from Yale Divinity School in 1994. He was ordained Deacon and Priest in 1994 at St. Stephen's Church, Tottenville, Staten Island.

After ordination Jerry was Curate at St. John's Church, Getty Square, Yonkers, until November 1995 when he was asked to join the diocesan staff. In 1997 he became Assistant Controller, and in 2002 was appointed Controller of the Diocese and in the fall of 2005 the acting Chief Administrative Officer of the Diocese.

He represented the Diocese as a Deputy to the General Conventions of 2003 and 2006 and serves on the Program, Budget & Finance Committee of the General Convention and the Audit Committee of the Executive Council. In April 2006 in addition to his job on the diocesan staff, Bishop Sisk appointed him Bishop's Vicar of The Church of the Intercession.

He is the author of Remember the Future: Financial Leadership and Asset Management in Churches (New York:: Church Publishing, Inc., 2006).
